Sims was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 27, 1990. He attended Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, where he was a four-star recruit and one of the best players in the state. He committed to play college basketball at Georgetown University, where he played for four seasons.
As a senior at Georgetown, Sims was named to the All-Big East First Team and NABC All-District Second Team. He also led the Hoyas to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost in the first round to Florida.
Sims was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans with the 54th pick in the 2012 NBA draft. He was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers on draft night and played for them for two seasons. Erie Bay Hawks (2012–2013)
After going undrafted in the 2012 NBA draft, Sims joined the Utah Jazz for the Orlando Summer League and the Chicago Bulls for the Las Vegas Summer League. On September 10, 2012, he signed with the New York Knicks. However, he was waived on October 27. In November 2012, he was acquired by the Erie BayHawks.
On February 4, 2013, Sims was named to the All-Star Prospects list for the 2013 NBA D-League All-Star Game.
